Colleges Local colleges offer various career paths Prepaid College Tuition Program Question: What is the Florida Prepaid Tuition Program? Answer: The program allows Florida residents to lock in the cost of tuition and housing for a child's college education at today's prices. Are children in the plan assured of being admitted to a university or community college? Children in the plan are not given any advantage in the university admission process. The nine state universities are admitting only one of every eight applicants and the competition is getting keener every year. However, all Florida high school graduates are assured of being admitted to any of Florida's 28 community colleges. How much does it cost? You pay whatever the tuition cost is for four years at a university or two years at a community college plus an interest rate of 7.5 percent per year.

The tuition costs change from year to year. If a university contract is selected, the parent or whoever is making the payments also may choose a prepaid dormitory contract. Do I pay it all up front, or monthly, like an investment? Either way. During the 1992-93 subscription period, which has ended, the four-year tuition payment for an 1 1th-grade student who would enroll in 1994 could have been made in a single payment of $5,375 or 18 monthly payments of $300. For a one-year-old child who would enroll in 2009, the parent could have elected to make a single payment of $5, 182, monthly payments of $46 until the child enrolls or 55 monthly payments of $11 1 (the five- year plan).

Will that cover all of the costs for my child to go to college? No. Tuition amounts to only 17 percent of the cost of going to a university. Even if you elect the dormitory plan, you still will have to find a way to pay for the majority of costs, including meals. If my child decides to go to college in another state or decides not to go to college at all, can I get my money back? You will get back the money you put in but none of the interest your investment has accumulated. What if my child decides to attend another private college in Florida? The plan will pay the cost of tuition up to the cost of public university tuition, including interest.

How is the money in the program managed? All money is invested in a trust fund set up by the state. Should the fund run out of money, does the state guarantee that beneficiaries' tuition will be paid? Yes. Will the program affect the student's eligibility for financial aid? It may. When can I sign up? During the next enrollment period, which will run from October until early January 1994. Then you may get an application through First Union Banks or by calling the Prepaid Program at (800) 552-GRAD.
