D2 THE JOURNAL-NEWS, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 30, 1988 IN THE NEWS in the bleachers U.S. wrestlers droo match to USSR dv ctcwc mnnoc lJ 1 UILVL IVIUUIIL Penrith, a senior at Iowa where he wrestled for Dan Gable who coached the Americans last night, will attempt to make the Olympic team. After his graduation from Iowa, he will remain under Gable's tutelage as a graduate assistant coach. One of the most dramatic matches came at 198 pounds, where the USSR's Makharbek Khadhartsev faced Jim Scherr. The two were ranked first and second in the world, respectively, last year, and it showed.

The match was scoreless until the final four seconds when Khadartsev, who is unbeaten in his international competition career, scored a takedown with a gut wrench move to win 2-0. winners that made good showings at the Summit. Even in defeat, some of the young wrestlers proved that they would be forces if not at this summer's Olympics in Seoul, then in 1992. Brad Penrith, the New York State high school champion at 98 pounds in 1981 from Windsor (Section 4), lost to five-time Tbilisi Tournament champion Ruslan Ka-raev at 125.5 pounds, 6-2. But Penrith, the 1986 and '87 NCAA champion from the University of Iowa, was still pleased with his performance, and delighted to be back in New York for the event. "I couldn't wait to come back, because I haven't wrestled in the state since the 1983 Empire State Games," said Penrith, who has been competing in Greco-Roman style wrestling in college.

"This was my first international competition, and I haven't wrestled freestyle since 1984, so it was a whole new experience." By Lisa Winston Wilentz Slafl Writer NEW YORK The United States has not had a two-time Olympic champion in wrestling since 1908. Randy Lewis and Bruce Baumgartner would like to change that. Both Lewis and Baumgartner, gold medalists in freestyle at the 1984 Summer Olympics, won their respective matches last night at the USA-USSR Wrestling Summit held at Madison Square Garden's Felt Forum. At 136.5 pounds, Lewis deci-sioned 1986 world champion Khaz-er Isaev 5-1, allowing just a first-period reversal. "I still feel I have a few years left, or at least this year," said Lewis, 28, who was also a member of the 1980 Olympic team which boycotted the Games in Moscow.

"I get fired up wrestling the Russians. Not because I didn't get to face them at the last two Olympics I've put that behind me. But because I want to face the best possible competition to prepare for this summer." 'Big Klu' dies from heart attack The Associated Press Ted Kluszewski, the Cincinnati Reds' bare-armed slugger in the 1950s, died last night. He was 63. Kluzewski apparently suffered a heart attack and died at Bethesda-North Hospital in Cincinnati, according to the Thomas Funeral Home.

"Big Klu" retired as the Reds' minor league hitting instructor last year and had undergone bypass surgery after a previous heart attack in 1986. Kluszewski, the Reds' first baseman from 1947 to 1957, was a four-time All-Star. He led the National League with 49 homers and 141 RBI in 1954, his'best season. Kluszewski, recognized by his big forearms and large biceps, was one of baseball's most feared hitters in his prime. He had 279 homers with 1,028 RBI and a .298 average in his 15-year career and.

was enshrined in the Reds' Hall of Fame. Plans for services were incomplete. Football: Blackledge traded The Associated Press The Pittsburgh Steelers, seeking to improve tlie NFL's worst passing attack, acquired quarterback Todd Blackledge from the Kansas City Chiefs for a fourth-round pick in next month's draft. "It just never worked out for me in Kansas City but I'm loooking to coming here and proving myself and I couldn't be any happier," said Blackledge, 27, the son of Steelers' offensive line coach Ron Blackledge. The 6-foot-3, 219-pound Blackledge, from Penn State, will duel with the oft-booed Mark Malone; third-year pro Bubby Brister and Steve Bono, a former Minnesota Vikings' backup, for the Steelers' starting job.

Elsewhere, the National Labor Relations Board issued a third complaint against the National Football League Management Council and its member clubs, alleging five more violations of federal labor laws during last year's negotiations with the NFL Players Association. The complaint was issued against Billy Sullivan and the New England Patriots for waiving NFLFA vice president Brian Holloway the day after he appeared on Monday Night Football and criticized the club owners for their bargaining stance. Sullivan and the Patriots are charged with unlawful union discrimination against Holloway. Boxing: Honeyghan KOs Vaca The Associated Press Take a bigger lead. Looking good.

Colleges: Tol is plans suit The Associated Press The University of New Orleans fired men's basketball coach Art Tolis for "just cause," apparently intending to avoid buying out the remaining two years of his contract.

Tolis said he doesn't like the implication that he did anything wrong and will go to court to fight the dismissal. "I do not intend for anyone to release a statement like they released today, with all its implications, without having to back it up," he said. His base salary was $58,000 a year, meaning Jhe school would have to pay $116,000 to buy him out. However, dismissal for cause would relieve the school of that burden, unless Tolis presses a successful appeal. Tolis said he has hired lawyer and ill sue for breach of contract and damages.

Tolis had been offered the opportunity to resign. Athletic director Ron Maestri announced the firing in a four-sentence statement, refused to answer questions and left the room where reporters had been summoned for a new conference. Elsewhere, 37 athletes at Clemson University, have tested positive for drugs since the school's 1 testing program began in January 1985, the school said. Of that number, 29 tested positive for marijuana, six for cocaine and two for steroids. There have been suspensions, but school officials would not reveal how many, nor were the names of those who tested positive made public.

Of the 37 positive results, 11 were the result of random testing. Louisville assistant Wade Houston was interviewed by University of Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds in Dallas as the school searches for a new Longhorn basketball coach, Houston's son, Allan, said. Texas athletic officials discounted reports that the UT was talking to Michigan basketball coach Bill Frieder about a similar position at the Austin scriool have been discounted by Texas officials. Yachting: Fay warns Americans The Associated Press New Zealand yachtsman Michael Fay warned the San Diego Yacht Club that he will press for the America's Cup to be taken from the Americans if they do not defend the trophy in a monohull yacht. The San Diego Yacht Club, scheduled to race against a yacht from Fay's Mercury Bay Boating' Club in September, has said it ill sail a niultihull yacht, probably a catamaran, in the race series off San Diego.

Fay said the order by the New York State Supreme Court, compelling the San Diego club to accept his challenge, requires that the race be held "by monohull yachts of 90 feet on the waterline," and he said he is insisting that the order be followed. Tom Ehman of Sail America, the defense manager for the San Diego Yacht Club, said that Fay had no right to dictate the type of boat used for the Cup defense. 1:11 300 260 5.00 THIRD RACE: Pace Condi Off: $9,000 5 WyattsTorch(Bauer) 1.40 4 00 4 Ladys StrlkerIB Webster) 2.80 9 Ob's Hlva DoonlW O'donneH) BASEBALL American League) CLEVELAND INDIANS Released Frank Wills, pitcher, and John Moses, outfielder.
