The Burlington Free Press Saturday, October 2, 2004 3C Parenting Stinky kids need intervention Parents must teach unawares adolescents about hygiene Wash hair daily, or more than once daily, depending upon how oily it is. Use conditioners that are mostly made of water. Avoid shampoos with built-in conditioners, because they can leave a build-up of film on hair over time. For black teens JVash hair no more than once or twice a week. Condition hair every time you wash it.

Avoid heavy gels, which dry hair and leave it brittle. For mixed race teens Visit a salon and consult with a stylist to find out what hair type you have and the best way to care for it. Gannett News Service Hygiene primer About sweat What it is: Mostly water. It also contains sodium chloride and electrolytes and sometimes contains fat molecules. Why you sweat: To cool your body.

As a pea-sized drop of sweat evaporates off of the surface of your skin, it the potential to cool almost a liter of blood by one degree. Caffeine can also make you sweat. Why it stinks: Sweat is actually pretty odorless. The stink comes from compounds in stinky foods you eat, such as garlic and onions. Stink also occurs when bacteria on your skin break down the fat in sweat and multiply.

What to do: Bathe daily to reduce the amount of bacteria on your skin; take special care to dry feet afterward; use foot powders to absorb excess sweat and help control foot odor; wear natural-fiber clothing to allow air to keep your skin dry; use an antiperspirant; cut down on drinks with caffeine and avoid foods with strong odors. Source: Mayo Clinic at www.mayoclinic.com About hair care Hair care depends on your hair texture, which largely depends on your race. For Caucasians, Hispanics and Asians By Christine Rook Gannett News Service When it comes to personal hygiene, some adolescents get it Some don't. You can tell by the stink. "You're in a classroom, and it's August and early September and it's hot and you're perspiring and you have bacteria on your skin because you haven't bathed you stink," says Mary LaPorte, a school nurse for six Michigan schools.

She knows children's stench. She handles a middle school full of fifth- and sixth-graders. "We've had teachers who. had to move their kids," she says. The windows get opened, and that's when LaPorte is called to lecture on a little something called deodorant.

It's horrifying to think there are pre-teens and teens who can make a pack of dental floss last to the close of the 2008 Olympics. It seems impossible a child could take a 20-m'inute shower without getting his hair wet. This stuff happens, though. For parents of adolescents, it could be time to wake up and smell the body odor. Proper hygiene is important for obvious reasons such as the maintenance of teeth, II Illustration by CHRISTOPHER RICHARDS, Free Press declared and confessed she tried it herself.

So why is it some children use deodorant and others don't? Dr. Joshua Petrikin, a general pediatrician with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, breaks it down this way. An early teen might not know she stinksAn older one might lose interest out of depression. A few others might refuse to bathe just to irk their parents. "The more they sense you want them to do something, the more they resist," Petrikin says.

A parent can compromise, but not on the big things. If your child stinks, you have to say something do something. It's about more than physical health. "Parents," LaPorte says, "don't let your kids make this decision on their own, because it's important for them socially." no odoriferous goat-boy stench. He's a guy who appreciates good hygiene.

"It's the right thing to do," he says. His grandmother, Verma Ferguson, 71, whom Larry lives with, appreciates his cleanliness. "The first thing he does in the morning is he washes his face and brushes his teeth'," she says. Sometimes the best way to skin, hair and nails, but it's also important socially. The child probably will get talked about behind his or her back.

That's right. There's more than health at stake. "It's hard to make friends when you don't smell good," warns student Larry Cohen, 12. "People don't want to hang out with you." The pre-teen from Lansing, is a family's dream get pre-teens and teens excited about good hygiene is to provide them with products made just for them. A home-based company called OT OverTime in Cincinnati has launched a product line aimed at adolescent boys.

The products have cool names such as "Body Slam" and "Pit Defense." For fun, Larry tried the Pit Defense Vertical Blast scent and loved it. "It's cool," his grandmother TV Tips KIDS: Toons, reality in TV lineup Other choices tonight include: "The Mansion," 10 a.m., TBS. Here is the latest variation on a home renovation show. Eight people ranging from a 28-year-old cheerleading coach to a 39-year-old grandmother work on a Cincinnati mansion. Viewers will decide which person gets to keep it.

"Beethoven" (1992), 8-10 p.m., Pax TV. Because everyone else is showing reruns now, you might as well settle back and watch this fun dog film. Charles Grodin plays a dad who reluctantly becomes the owner of a St. Bernard. The subplot about evil pet-store people is silly but the dog is a delight and the supporting actors are interesting.

They include Bonnie Hunt and (before TV stardom) David Duch-ovny and Patricia Heaton. "CSI: Miami," 9 p.m., CBS. Home invaders abduct a surfing star in this rerun. "Saturday Night Live," 11:30 p.m., NBC. Ben Affleck hosts with Nelly as musical guest.
