a Gottfried tops Ramirez to win Washington tennis Sun Staff Washington- -Unemotional Brian Gottfried withstood a late charge by crowd favorite Raul Ramirez yesterday to score a 7-5, 7-6 victory in the championship match of the Washington Volvo Tennis Classic. The nearly two-hour match before a capacity crowd of 5,000 spectators at George Washington University's Smith Center was spiced by several exciting exchanges between the two doubles partners. But in the end, the top-seeded Gottfried was able to reach back for a little extra on his serve and win the crucial points to close out the match in the 12-point tiebreaker of the second set by a margin of 7- 4. It was the first tournament victory this year for the 25-year-old Gottfried, of Bonaventure, and his second straight win in the Washington Volvo tournament. The top seed picked fourth $21,250 first-prize money, while the Ramirez, of Mexico, was awarded $10,625 for second place.

Ramirez became the people's choice in the eighth game of the second set after apon serves Gottfried that appeared long. parently gettins, the short end of two calls Both calls came at deuce, and Gottfried won both points and the game to even the score at 4-4. The first one evoked the only complaint from Ramirez during match. Ramirez lost the first point on a Gottfried volley and the second one on a Gottfried overhead winner. "On that first point he won, I was going to hit the ball back," explained Ramirez, "but It thought his serve was out and didn't even chase the ball.

That was my mistake." Ramirez maintained that his concentration was not broken by the calls, but Gottfried broke at 30 in the next game for a 5-4 lead and was serving for the match in the 10th game. However, with the fans cheering nearly every move, Ramirez charged back in the 10th game to break at 15 and held serve at 15 in the 11th game for a 6-5 lead. While holding serve in the 11th, Ramirez really turned the crowd on after hitting a netcord shot that just barely tipped over for a point. He mimicked his "great form" on the shot by swinging his racket forward, as if to say he had it planned all the way. But Gottfried subdued the Ramirez charge a little by holding service at 15 in the next game to send the set and the match to the 12-point tie-breaker.

Ramirez picked up the tempo again midway through the tie-breaker to go ahead, 4-3. He hit a perfect lob to even it at 3-all and slammed a backhand passing shot off Gottfried's serve to go ahead. Then Ramirez surprised virtually everybody by double-faulting the next point away, and Gottfried moved in for the kill on the final 3 points. He hit a backhand passing shot for 5-4, served only his third ace of the day for 6-4, and smashed a Correspondent backhand volley for 7-4 after sending Ramirez deep to retrieve a shot. Gottfried, a native of Baltimore, said, "I served well when it counted, and that was basically the whole story.

"He returns service so well that it's tough to get into any kind of routine. And being aware of it affected my serve early." Gottfried also had problems with his backhand in the first set, committing several unforced errors to fall behind, 4-2. But he began zeroing in on his backhand late in the first set and took charge of the match. "I was trying to come over on my backhand more today instead of slicing it," added Gottfried, "and it worked pretty good. Also, I hit my ground strokes well and may have surprised him a little by staying back at times." Gottfried believes he is playing better this year than last, when he finished second on the Grand Prix tour.

"But I've just been losing some close matches. In the long run, I think I'm going to be better off with a more complete game," he said. Ramirez, who has become a more aggressive in the last two tournaments, said, "I wasn't as sharp as I could have been on some of the big points. But I figured to lose some points by taking more chances. "I'd been playing well before, but when I got to the good players, I'd lose.

Now, I believe I can beat the good players by coming to the net and putting the ball away. Beating the top players is more important to me now than winning money. Gottfried fifth-ranked in the world and Ramirez is eighth-rated. In the doubles final, the top and defending champion team of Stan Smith and Bob Lutz defeated the unseeded pair of Arthur Ashe and John McEnroe, 6-7, 7- 5, 6-1. It was the first time that the veteran Ashe and 19-year-old McEnroe had played together.

Goolagong whips Evert in Boston, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 Boston (AP)-Third-seeded Evonne Goolagong Cawley capitalized on several Chris Evert errors and displayed some dazzling shots of her own, to defeat the second-ranked player, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, in the final of a $100,000 tennis tournament yesterday. In an earlier consolation match, sixthranked Billie Jean King had downed the tournament's top-seed, Martina Navratilova, 6-4, for third place. Miss Evert, who found herself behind 3- 0, scoring only 2 points in the first three games, rallied with a strong volleying game to take the opening set. In the second set, Miss Evert committed a number of unforced errors, and in the third set, Miss Goolagong returned to her aggressive game after forging ahead, 4-3, charging the net and varying her shots. Terp stickmen may prove tough to beat this year By JAMES H.

JACKSON Sun Staff College Park- The University of Maryland, which opened its 1978 lacrosse season Saturday by thrashing North Carolina State University, 25 to 11, in Raleigh, N.C., in an Atlantic Coast Conference game, could be tough to beat this season. The Terrapins, who lost only to Johns Hopkins University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association University Division tournament semi-finals a year ago, are once again loaded with depth and talent. "I'm very excited about this season," said Terp coach Bud Beardmore. "We have a good ball club and I think we can play with anyone. "We had a couple of scrimmages that pleased me very much, and our win Saturday against N.C.

State was encouraging. The team showed excellent effort and great enthusiasm." Beardmore, has won two national titles as head coach of Maryland, has a strong array of talent with which to challenge Cornell University for the University Division title this season. Returning at attack are John Lamon, who had 4 goals and three assists Saturday, Bob Boniello, who had seven assists in the rout the Wolfpack, and Terry Kimball, who scored 4 goals, plus Rick Moyer, five assists, and Drew Tyree. "We feel we have an excellent attack," the Terp coach continued. "They have experience and know-how." Beardmore indicated that he will go with only two midfields- -quite a departure for Maryland which normally runs as many as five midfield units -for the present.

"It is too early to think about more than two midfields. We'll see how things go and maybe run more later in the season," Beardmore said. one the first midfield right now are Bobby Ott, one of the top face-off men in the nation, Tony Morgan and Pete Worstell. Ott had a goal and two assists against N.C. State, Morgan 3 goals and three assists and Worstell had 4 goals.

The second unit is Kevin McConnell, Mike Thearle and Mark Shores. Shores had 5 goals and an assist Saturday Backing up the first two units are Doug Sadler, a freshman from Wroxeter School and Clay Johnson, a freshman from upstate New York. Barry Mitchell, veteran middie, cut his hand opening a jelly jar a week ago and will be lost to the Terrapins for at least another week. Lance Kohler, who starred at both midfield and attack for the Terps last year, is being redshirted this season. Maryland's defense is also a veteran unit with Ed Pray, Dick Shakespear, George Miller and Randy Ratliff all back from last year.

Bryan Waters and junior college transfer Sandy Kapatos, are in a heated battle for the starting goalie job, according to Beardmore. "Both are excellent goalies with con- 2 trasting styles," said Beardmore. "Waters is about 6-foot-2 and left-handed and Kapatos, a transfer from Nassau Community College, is not very tall, but is very quick DEATH NOTICES (215) On ISANOGLE March 18, 1978, HELEN 21e D.
