COLONIAL HOTEL GUEST VICTIM OF BOLD THIEF Oaring Robber, Frightened By Chicago Man Whom He Awakened, Makes Escape By Descending An Elevator Shaft. The attempt of a daring robber to operate In the Colonial hotel last night was the occasion of excitement on the part of guests, a number of whom were a rouged from sleep and greatly alarmed by the loud outcry made by a guest who wag a prospective victim of the" thief. C. E. Shaft of Chicago, who arrived at the hotel eary In the night, was assigned to room 613 on tho fifth floor and retired, leaving the key to bis door en the outside and the door unlocked.

At midnight he was awakened by some person who entered his room. He Immediately made an outcry and when the robber ran he followed, giving an alarm whlcb aroused hotel employes and a number of guests, Night Engineer Graves, who occupied room with other emp oy who bad not retired, said that he Imrae. dlately opened the door and saw ths fleeing robber who mads his escaps down a rear stairway and escaped by rear door. It is assumed, after leaping across an elevator shaft from the third floor or fourth, floor of ths hotel C. Evans, night clerk at the Colonial, said, fol.owing the attempted robbery, that the rear doors of ths hotel were locked and that it cannot be determined how the thief His escape was made by removing the' fastening from tho inside of a rear door.
