Sports With BBs Will Women Take Over Negro Baseball Loop? "By Bill Will women bait players eventually take over the Negro American League? Last year the Kansas City Monarchs brolje the ice by playing Toni Stone at second part time. She proved a booa to sagging Negro American League gates. This year the Indianapolis Clowns have c.ome up with two women players and both will be in action, along with Toni Stone, when the Mon- arclis and Clowns meet Wednesday night at Blue Jay paric. The Clowns have signed Connie Morgan, a $10,000 rookie second saeker, and Mamie (Peanuts) Johnson, the first and only girl hurlcr ever to pitch in the Negro American League. She has a number of scoreless innings to her credit and in May held the Monarchs scoreless, with cniy Toni Stone getting on base via the base hit route.

May Be Answer The wotnuii jjiayer; may be the answer to the Negro American League's problem of getting top gate attractions. Following the second world war, when Negro playeis broke into the National and American Leagues, the cream of the crop was taken from, the Negro.circuits. As a result, the Negro National League' folded and Hie Ne'gru American League cut down to a slinky 4-team loop. At the same time the Negro clubs, who once, drew Inp crowds in major league cities, found Attendance was way off as fans went to the parks In watch Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby, Satchel Paige and other great Negro stars in action in the major circuits; So the four clubs that survived in the Negro American League assembled the best talent they could obtain, comparable to AAA or AA minor league players, and hit the road. However, there are outstanding players still in action in the league.

Ernie Banks, 'who went directly to the Chicago Cubs where he has won berth at shortstop, was a Negro American Leaguer last year. Tiie loop has been strengthened by a number of playws returned from the service. Toni Stone be the big attraction for th" Inst year, allhough she played less than three or four innings, and batted only once or twice while in Salina. The Monarchs' really outstanding player, Banks, was given little buildup, but dycd-in-thc- wool baseball fans saw in him a future major league prospect. Clowns Take Cue This season the Clowns seem to have taken a cue to the Monarcbs' success and have added the two women to their roster.

Birmingham's Black Barons and the Memphis Red Sox may follow, if they haven't already done so. It would not be too surprising, if, in a few years, the Negro American League teams were made up to a great extent with women The fortunes of the NAL are rising this year. The Monarchs and Clowns move into Blue Jay park from Busch Stadium in St. Louis, where they play the night before they meet here. July 11 the teams play two games in Yankee Stadium, then go to Shibe Park in Philadelphia and Griffith Stadium in Washington.

They are slowly moving back into major league cities, where they once played exclusively. No-Hitter Pitched There has been a no-hitter in the circuit already this year. Jim Gilmore, a 21-year-old stand- but, tossed it May 17 against Memphis, the first no-hitter by a Monarch pitcher in 10 years. So, far from being dead, Negro baseball is making a strong comeback and should enjoy one of its'best seasons since the war, especially with the big gates in major league cities anticipated. Two dajs befoie Emory (Bubba) Church, the ex-Salina Blue Jay pitching star, was sold to the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast" League, is what the Chicago Cub News--a monthly publication for Cub followers--had to say about him: "Bubba Church, who pitched for Magallones i Venezuelan League this winter, came up with a new pitch, a slider, Baseball observers who saw him pitch say his fastball and cilrve were as effective as in 1950 when Bubba won eight and lost six for, the champion Phillies, in 1951 when he posted a 15-U record." Just 48 hours later he was on his way to the minors.

Incidentally, kids, if you want personally-signed autographs. of Chicago Cub players, you may obtain them free. Just write the player whose autograph you want, Wrigley Field, Chicago, 13, 111., enclosing a self-addressed envelope. If you ask for more than one autograph, be sure to a post card with your name and address on it, for each player's name you want. It's something new.
