each M2 3.96 oured face. each 2 Man Nylon Tent Men's Bathing Suits By BRUCE LITTLE Southam News Services SPRINGHILL, N.S. -When Springhill gets into the news, it is usually a disaster or singer Anne Murray that puts it there. This time it is disaster, the fifth in 84 ears. But it has not taken the town's 5200 people long to acquire a cooi perspective of the fire that destroyed half of Springhills business district.

In the first couple of days after the, Sunday morning fire, the townspeople declared that the town would survive the fire. By later in the week, the determination was still there, but in a quieter form, muted somewhat by the knowledge that Springhill had been luckier this time than it had been before. No one was killed or even injured in the fire. For a town tfcat has lost 400 men in three major mining disasters and smaller accidents, that is something to be thankful for. "This fire's nothing," said Grant Jackson, 30.

"It just doesn't compare with the lives we lost in the last disasters. Material things you can replace." Thornton Henwood, 63, feels the same way. He is a guide at the Springhill Miner's Museum, the town's only real tourist attraction. Each day, he runs through the history of the tow n's coal mines for curious tourists, and takes them on a hulf-hour walk through a real, though now discontinued, mine. He tells them about the explosion in 1891, that killed 125 men, the second explosion in 1956 that killed another 39 miners, and the "bump" in 1958.

when 75 ii)en died. In the years before they were shut down in 1959, there were other accidents in the mines, the small ones that take a life or two, the ones that are part of any mine. Mr. Henwood hadn't even been downtown to look at the charred ruins after the lire. "It's a blow, and a big loss," he said.

"But I consider us very lucky in a way. We haven't lost one child or man or woman in it. "I just don't put it in the class with the kind of things that happened in the mines." He spent 43 years in the mines, some of them at Springhill, some elsewhere, and he reflected at least one common feeling. "It's a hard luck town. You can't escape that.

There's no two ways about it." It's an opinion you can hear often on Main Street. The word "jinxed" crops up over and ovef again. John Rushton, 68, didn't think that about the town before, but "I think it now." That kind of talk annoys people like Mayor Bill Mont, and Charles Allbon, publisher of the Springhill Record, the town's weekly paper. Mr. Allbon, 79, lost his paper in the 1957 fire which burned the half of the main street which survived Sunday's fire.

The 1957 bla moved down the street, stopping after it had burned the Record offices. This fire moved up the street, and was halted only after it had destroyed the Record "We were the last ones in each fire," said his son Jack who also worked on the paper. Charles Allbon's temper flared briefly at the mention of the word "jinx." "No," he said scornfully of such comments. "I get sick and tired of them. "Every town has had fires." Bill Mont was just as strong on the subject.

"If we were jinxed, we wouldn't have recovered from each disaster. The fact that we did shows that we aren't." He complained mildly about Springhills's image in the rest of Canada. "We're stuck with the fallacy outside people have of coal mining towns being scruffy little places. We haven't been a coal town for twenty years," he said, 100 Nylon or Lastex.
