blaze in North Carolina being contained CAPE CARTERET, N.C. (AP) Several hundred Marines and firefighters kept a stubborn, forest fire trapped inside an 18- mile containment line yesterday as they battled to bring it under control, officials said. "We're mopping up now," said Charlie Crail, fire information officer with the U.S. Forest Service. "We're making sure nothing blows over the containment line and starts a fire on the other side." Originally, firefighters had hoped to have the blaze under control by Saturday night, but "because of deep burning and some hot spots we had to change our control time," he said.

"We're going to be using a lot of water today because it's a ground fire now," he said. The fire had consumed 5,695 acres, mostly in the Croatan National Forest that stretches across Carteret, Craven and Jones es counties in eastern North Carolina. It had destroyed one house and done an estimated $90,000 in damage since it began about noon Thursday, said Crail. More than 300 Marines from Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point were aiding 124 Forest Service workers in battling the fire. Among the firefighters were crews from Kentucky, Mississippi and Georgia, but Crail said he expected some of them to be sent home.

Chemical heat suspected cause of Chicago blast CHICAGO (AP) Overheated chemicals may have caused an explosion Friday that ripped through -a South Side factory, killing three people and injuring 16 others, a detective says. "When you heat the chemicals too hot, they spell explosion," said Detective Mike Gerhardstein of the Police Bomb and Arson Unit. Gerhardstein said he was "leaning pretty strongly" on the theory that the chemicals exploded because of overheating. The explosion occurred about 7 p.m. Friday, when many workers on the second shift were taking a lunch break in another part of the building.

The explosion gutted the building and blew off the roof. The factory, the Tool and Engineering manufactured aluminum parts and metal castings for automobiles and used naturalgas-fed fires to melt aluminum chips for forging, workers said. Aluminum rods were dipped in heated chemical to strengthen them, Gerhardstein said.
