Stanford loves the new best- of-three championship final format at the College World Series. Two years ago, the Cardinal went through bracket play unbeaten only to lose 12-1 to Miami in the winner- takes-all championship game.

Stanford 150-16) us, Rice (56-11) Game 1: Today, 4:05 Back in the final for the third time in four years, Stanford (50-16). opens the championship series against Rice (56-11) on Saturday. And this time, one loss, doesn't spell doom. "There are good days and bad days in baseball, and there are those types of games where one team has the upper hand," Stanford right fielder Carlos Quentin said. "All our team loves it.

It makes a statement. If you win this, you did it the right way." Rice coach Wayne Graham said the new format will crown a true champion in college baseball. "I don't think any of us particularly liked the idea you could go into the championship game and the team with the single most dominant pitcher in college base- ball could be out there and that could be it," Graham said. "At least you have to have two good ones now and some relief, and that's a good thing." The Owls arguably have the most dominant pitcher in Jeff Niemann He will start the first game against either senior Ryan McCally (7-2) or freshman Mark Romanczuk (12-1). Rice is 3-0 in the tournament after beating Southwest Missouri State in its opener and then defeating Texas twice.

Stanford is 4-1 after beating South Carolina, losing to Cal State Fullerton, and then defeating Fullerton twice. The Cardinal won 7-5 in 10 innings on Thursday to advance. "All through the playoffs, it's been one great pitching staff after another," Stanford senior catcher Ryan Garko said. "This is going to be our toughest matchup. I guess that's the way it should be.

To win the national championship, you should-have to beat all the best teams. This is the best team we've faced all season." Stanford coach Mark Marquess doesn't lament that the best-of-three format wasn't in place when the Cardinal lost championship See CWS, Page 7 UHS student wins soccer tourney ogo contest The Dally Journal Ukiah High School student Sarah Hadley crafted an eye-catching piece of art, capturing the recently-held Ukiah Wine Harvest Soccer Tournament's logo design contest. Hadley's design beat out the heated competition of 17 other UHS student- designed pieces. With a myriad of worthy works, the tournament board had a tough task at hand selecting a winning logo. Ukiah Valley Youth Soccer League hosts the Ukiah Wine Harvest Soccer Tournament annually in September.

This year the tournament will host 48 teams both boys and girls, age ranging from 12-14. Teams travel from as far north as and as far south as San Jose. Ainsworth could be out for weeks OAKLAND, Calif. Promising San Francisco rookie pitcher Kurt Ainsworth be out much longer than the Giants anticipated with an injured right shoulder. Ainsworth left his rehab start Wednesday at Triple-A Fresno because of stiffness in the area behind his throwing shoulder.

He was scheduled to throw 70 or 80 pitches, but came out after only 34. The pitcher will get a second opinion from Dr, James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. The Giants had thought Ainsworth had sufficient rest and was ready to return. Instead, Ainsworth will not return for "weeks," trainer Stan Conte said. "What we're doing is taking a half-step back and Devaluating," Conte said.

"Whatever we did getting him prepared for his minor league start aid not We thought we were being conservative. lie took one fewer bullpen session before Ms rehab assignment. We ttunk he didn't have enough time and he didn't have enough rehab," The 24-year-old Ainsworth, a first- round draft pick by the Giants jn 1999, is 5-4 with a 3.82 ERA in 11 starts this season, Bulls point guard injured in motorcycle wreck Bulls guard Jay Williams was recuperating Friday following surgery to repair injuries sustained when he crashed his week-old motorcycle. The Bulls wouldn't comment on the extent of Williams' injuries, and his family didn't return phone calls from The Associated Press on Friday. But a source close to Williams, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said while the injuries were not life-threatening, they do jeopardize the 21-year-old's playing career.

"The last thing on our minds right now is basketball and the foremost thought on our minds is that of Jay's health," Bulls general manager John Paxson said in a statement Friday, "We respect the privacy of the family and as time goes on we will be waiting for the family and doctors to report to us on Jay's status." Williams was riding a new Yamaha sportbike that he had purchased last week when it slammed into a pole Thursday afternoon on the north side of Chicago. The impact broke one of his legs, and a witness said she saw Williams laying about 10 feet from where his bike came to rest. After the crash Williams was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. A spokeswoman at the hospital on Friday referred all inquiries to the Bulls.
