Julie's fat is her fortune Gossip Column by Robin Adams Sloan HELEN I HELP US BY HELEN BOTTEL Dear Helen: Remember the girlie magazine hassle in your column? Uptieht dames, furious about their husbands' nudie- watching, said they'd display pictures of naked males on their coffee tables, except the very idea "made them sick." A few said this kind of revenge would Si backfire, as friends would figure they were dingy. What 8 WOMAN, they asked, would look at an unclothed man? Boy, am I laughing! If the little ladies don't care for manly curves (with a lot of skin), how come you couldn't find an April Cosmopolitan anywhere in town three hours after it hit the NEW YORK (UPI)-JuIie De John's fat is her fortune. The singer and comedienne has turned her size (280 pounds) into an asset that along with her big voice (a 3-octave range) makes her one of the leading supper club and television entertainers today. She kids the audience about her weight and they love it. As she says, "A lot of them out there have weight problems too.

Well, they see me and say, 'I don't feel so bad. She's fatter than me." "I can tell everyone else how to lose weight," she said. "I've got over 100 diet books that say fat isn't beautiful. "I told my doctor maybe it was because of a thyroid gland condition. "No More," which their brother Leo wrote.

The new combination continued for seven years but broke up when the other girl married. Miss De John then decided to go it single. Her husband told her, "Look, you don't need a crutch up there (on stage)." Through the years she's appeared on almost all the big talk and variety shows on television (46 times on the Mike Douglas show alone) and has played club dates from the Copacabana in New York to the hotels in the Catskills, husband, a former teacher now her business manager, tutors the children when they're "on the road." "We have a running school-house," she said, "including the Pledge of Allegiance, gym classes, library time.

When I was buying it, I asked the salesman, 'Where's the fitting room?" Miss De John started in show business in 1955 with her younger sister, Dux. They were billed as the De John sisters and in only six months had cut a million seller single record of "He said, 'Yes it is, too much fat around Miss De John, who's five feet five inches could do a whole club routine just about her difficulties with plane travel.

The stewardess came around and asked, 'Is your seat belt "Look, I told her, where would I be going?" Miss De John, a native of Chester, now living in Glen Mills near Philadelphia, in private life is Mrs. David Patterson and mother of two boys ages seven and eight. Her I can remember when Sonny and Cher looked alike.

Now she is so sexy, I can't believe it. What happened? J. Pater-son, N.J. Sonny got the message that the unisex look wasn't doing anything for Cher and he persuaded her to enjoy being a girl. Now she's on the Best-Dressed List.

But there are basic things, too, such as a little plastic work on Cher's famous bosom. Jackie ond Ari: Hove a rumor. it's a What's the i with Jackie and Ari? Things seem awfully quiet. W.R., New York, N.Y. world Settle a bet for us.

My wife says that none of the astronauts is divorced. I say she's wrong F.F., Rosevelle, Calif. You win. Of the 79 men who have been selected for the astronaut program, 63 are still married, two are bachelors and six are now divorced (eight of the group have been killed in accidents). During the first nine years of the program NASA was super-stuffy about the astronauts' image, and domestic difficulties were frowned on.

The men with rocky marriages concealed their problems rather than risk getting tossed out of the program for marring the All-American-boy image. The pattern began to change in 1969 when Donn Eisele and his wife split. He was followed by Alfred Worden of the Apollo 15 crew; next was Edgar D. Mitchell of Apollo 14 and the sixth man to walk on the moon. Both Gordon Cooper and Scott Carpenter were divorced after they left the program.

The quiet you speak of may only be the calm before the storm if Italy's Domenica del Corriere can be believed. That Sunday supplement has come out with an amazing story to the effect that Jackie and Ari have already signed papers on the isle of Skorpios and will announce their divorce after the November elections (to avoid any possibility of hurting Ted Kennedy should he decide to run The source of this story is Baroness Maria Gloria Skephis, supposed friend and sometimes social secretary to Jackie's sister, Lee.

Baroness Skephis said the divorce decision was made in January after a violent London airport quarrel between Jackie and Ari. The magazine says the couple's problems stem from Onassis' dislike of Jackie's extravagant image and from her objections to his invading her privacy (entering her bedroom without knocking, refusing to be barbered and showered before approaching her, Baroness Skephis claims the divorce settlement will be a generous $50 million and that Onassis will educate Caroline and John. The baroness also reports Jackie was furious with Ari because he paid too much attention to Mrs. Henry Ford II at a party the auto magnate and his wife gave on New Year's Eve in New York's El Morocco. We happen to know the Henry Fords were in Antigua on New Year's Eve.

So keep this in mind. It may be a valuable clue to just how reliable the rest of the baroness' story is. Sister M. ANN LANDERS How does a famous person like Tennessee Williams feel about such a writer as Rex Reed, who exposes these celebrities so unmercifully in the magazines? H.K., Evanston, III. A Tennessee is ever so nice when he meets Rex in person. In private he has a lot to say.

He has never gotten over Reed's listening to all his rambling discussions and then putting them down for Esquire. He says Rex should have known "what I said was for a psychiatrist and not for a magazine." Though he never will, Tennessee says he would consider it sweet revenge to write a piece about Rex. We hear that the highly publicized three-month cruise of the S.S. France was a huge flop. Is that true? M.M., New Orleans.

Financially the French Line did okay on the voyage. It didn't book all the fancy big suites, butdidfill all the smaller staterooms at $11,000 for two. Dear Ann Landers: If you print this letter you will be blessed by every beauty salon" owner in the world. It's a request that mothers leave their kids at home when they go to the beauty parlor. Our shop is small and we are manicure tables, put their hands in finger bowls and mess with the metal rollers and hairbrushes.

Mom, of course, doesn't see or hear a thing. Her head is under the dryer and her nose is buried in a magazine. The kids are so destructive we can't even keep shrubbery outside. No operator can do justice to a customer when children are stumbling over her feet and banging into the supply trays. If your letter doesn't do it, we'll have to put up a sign.

What do you say, Ann? On Tranks. Dear On: Here's the letter, but it won't solve the problem. Neither will the sign. The mothers with the wild kids never think you mean them. Is an upcoming wedding driving you bananas? An Landers' comprehensive booklet, "The Bride's Guide," Dear Ann Landers; My wife and I have been married four years.

Before we married I thought she was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen, as well as the most intelligent and thoughtful. I was sure she'd be the ideal wife and mother. I never dreamed she had a lazy bone in her body. Everything has changed. My dinner used to be on the table at 5:30.

Now, 'I'm lucky if I see it by 6:15. My wife used to be a fabulous cook. Now, I think she has a contest with herself to see how fast she can throw a meal together. I'd like to have a nickel for every time I've had to ask her to iron a shirt before I leave for work in the morning. We have four children, the youngest is three months.

I'd love to come home to a clean house, a decent meal and enjoy my little family. Is that asking too much? If you say it is, I'll never gripe again. Or, should I lay down the law and tell my wife to shape up or find someone who doesn't mind living like a slob. You decide. Mike in Hammond.

But today many institutions are giving long-term mortgages to borrowers who already are 65 or older." At the same time, he said, "the working woman or the divorcee or widow with her own financial resources has a far better chance of getting a mortgage today than she had even two or three years ago." Changing economic factors, and changing attitudes are behind the liberalized lending trends. Farry, who also is president of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Albert Lea, said that while there are differences in lending patterns from one area to another and even among different institutions within the same area, over-all change is evident when it comes to the would-be borrower who falls outside the main category of under-40 couples. The woman alone who would purchase a home, he NEW YORK ILPII -Traditional barriers which made it difficult, if not impossible, for a woman alone or the over-40 couple to obtain a home mortgage are giving way. John P. Farry, president of the United States Savings and Loan League, says: "Financing for home-buyers nearing or at retirement age has become commonplace.

And, while it still is not as easy for a woman to get a mortgage as it is for a man, the pendulum is swinging in that direction." Savings associations are the nation's biggest mortgage lenders and the U.S. League, with nearly 5,000 member institutions, is the major trade association. "It wasn't too long ago," Farry said, "that the 'rule of 65' prevailed. If you were 40 or over, your age, plus the term of the mortgage you were seeking, could not exceed the total of 65, the age at which said, has going for her today the changing attitude toward women in the work force. "As more and more women work and move into positions of greater responsibility, it's becoming obvious their sex is no barrier to handling the obligations of a mortgage," Farry said.

"Contributing, too, are new birth control methods and changing attitudes toward family size, which mean unmarried young women are more likely to continue working if they marry later on. Women's liberation and consumer movements also are exerting influence on lenders. "But probably the most important reason, is development of the condominium, and along with it the planned unit development. This is the logical type of housing for a woman because it provides the benefits of home ownership without the hard work involved in maintaining a single-family dwelling." The question now, Farry said, no longer revolvrs around a woman's ability to maintain a property. It becomes purely-one of economics: Can she afford the home? Is her income sufficient and steady enough to make the payments? The same criterion governs lending in the over-40 category.

"More and more." Farry said, "the lender's only concern is whether the older borrower has an adequate ratio of retirement income to the debt he wants to carry the same yardstick applied to borrowers in any other age bracket." The older buyer may be expected to put up more than the minimum down payment on a home, and he may not be able to get the maximum 30-year term but if he can afford the home he wants to buy, the older borrower will be able to get a loan.
